Comeback Medvedev Wins First Trophy in 882 Days

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hard courts

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev secured his initial title for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The athlete, a former world number one, has experienced a torrid year, managing just a single victory at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.

Medvedev's varied form on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in particular - caused him exiting of the top ten and eventually parting ways with long-time trainer Cervara.

Now working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has steadily advanced in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set victory over challenger Moutet.

This represents his first trophy following the Italian tournament and first on a hardcourt after March of the previous year.

Victory also indicates the Russian has secured twenty-one titles at 21 distinct events.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a competition with my two daughters simultaneously, so to get a championship is particularly special," commented ranked player the champion.

"This title is in tribute of my second daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, including in that event earlier this year.

Medvedev's retrieving play style and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had caused some to wonder if his ability to perform at the top level was finished.

But the player has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and play assertively, supported by an improved serving game.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky Frenchman, taking four of the final five games to go ahead.

Both players exchanged break points in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his first professional victory, took control to push for a decider.

He saved four early-game opportunities in a tight final set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to secure the win.

Suitably, Medvedev secured the win with a point at the net, with his opponent failing to manage a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
