This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
