New research indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these drugs must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
